Saree & Its Evolution Over Time

Indian Sarees

Indian Culture is not only about respect and reverence for each other and the art of living but also about the art of wearing. All the regions and religions of the world have their own culture with different custom and traditions. But, Indian Wears is uniformly worn by people of all social levels. India has a great diversity in terms of fabrics and colors.

In Indian Culture, the most worn costume is Saree, thus, it has become more than a national outfit. It is an artefact to India’s past, present and future. Saree is seen as a sacred commitment with the ladies out there, who are going to be married or are newly married. Indian wedding sarees are typically red or pink, a tradition that goes back to India’s pre-modern history. Sarees are usually known by different names in different places.

The most common style to wear saree post-independence was to wrap around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder baring the midriff. Post-independence, the sarees brooked some major experimentation with fabrics, patterns and drapes. It was when Bollywood Divas emerged and had the freedom to choose their own individual style. The era of printed sarees came and people overlooked the broad bordered sarees.

Traditional Saree

The evolution did not stop there, it kept changing and fabricated chiffon sarees which were a perfect balance of lucidity and vogue. Indian women ditched their printed sarees and opt for single colored chiffon sarees with a hint of eroticism.

Then, came the age of supermodels whose sarees were all made by the designers with extra fascination. Be it a net saree paired with revealing blouses, a low-waist Lehenga Saree or a pre-draped saree. The ladies looked marvelous in them.
